Politics
Northern Ireland had its own Parliament from 1921 to 1972 when street violence caused the British Government to assume direct responsibility. Since then successive governments have tried to establish a locally accountable administration commanding widespread support from both the Unionist and Nationalist communities.
Talks between the political parties and the British and Irish Governments have been ongoing in an attempt to reach an agreement to allow the restoration of the devolved administration following its suspension in 2002.
